The Eames House in LA’s Pacific Palisades, built in 1949 as part of Arts & Architecture’s Case Study House programme, remains largely unchanged amid eucalyptus groves. However, surrounding lots are covered in white tarpaulins from the January 2025 wildfires that burned over 40,000 acres, displaced 200,000 residents, and destroyed 12,300 structures. Despite high pre-fire median home prices of $3.4 million, rebuilding progress has been slow.

Local architects are responding with innovative, fire-resistant designs. The Case Study: Adapt programme, led by tech entrepreneur Dustin Bramell, involves 10 LA-based firms including Bestor Architecture and Marmol Radziner creating homes for 16 families, all 3,000 sq ft or less. Bramell, whose Robert Bridges House was destroyed, initiated the project after receiving ~400 applications; seven homes have broken ground, one is near completion, and six more are set to start soon.

His future home, a 2,900 sq ft insulated concrete structure by Woods + Dangaran, symbolizes resilience. The initiative aims to forge a next generation of Eames-inspired homes in the fire-endangered area.
