Matt Suhey, the Chicago Bears' legendary fullback who helped Walter Payton secure the 1985 NFL championship, has passed away at age 68. The Bears confirmed his death on Sunday morning. Suhey was drafted by Chicago in 1980 and played 10 seasons, forming a legendary partnership with Payton.

He was instrumental in the 1985 season, finishing as the team's second-leading rusher with 471 yards as Payton rushed for 1,551 yards and nine touchdowns. The 1985 Bears dominated the playoffs, shutting out the Giants and Rams before routing the Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX. Suhey scored the first touchdown of the game on an 11-yard run.

He finished the game with 52 yards on 11 carries and a 24-yard reception. Beyond his on-field contributions, Suhey was a close friend and confidant to the Payton family, serving as godfather to Payton's youngest son, Scott. After Walter Payton's death in 1999, Suhey became a primary father figure to Payton's children, particularly Jarrett, who posted a heartfelt tribute on social media.

Suhey's durability was evident in his 148 regular-season games played and 100 starts, finishing his career with 2,946 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns, along with 2,113 receiving yards.
