Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls was placed on the injured list with a right hip flexor strain, retroactive to September 6. Walls is hitting .218 with 33 RBI in 117 games this season and leads the majors in sacrifice hits with 12. With Walls sidelined, Nick Madrigal was added to the roster from Triple-A Durham.

Manager Kevin Cash indicated Jorge Mateo will serve as the primary shortstop during Walls' absence. Mateo, acquired on August 13, has played 17 games with 10 starts in a utility role, hitting .128. The AL East-leading Rays open a three-game series against NL East-leading Atlanta on Tuesday.
