The Mid-American Conference has appealed the outcome of Saturday night's game between Western Michigan and Michigan, asking the NCAA and College Football Playoff to recognize the Broncos as winners due to a replay protocol error. MAC commissioner Jon A. Steinbrecher stated replay protocol was not properly followed, with the replay official putting one second back on the clock after Bryce Underwood's Hail Mary touchdown pass, which initially appeared to be out of the end zone.

Michigan won 13-12 on the play. Steinbrecher acknowledged the Oversight Committee does not ordinarily alter results but called the circumstances extraordinary, saying the final outcome was directly affected by a replay officiating error. The Big Ten has not changed its stance, standing by the replay officials' determination.

The NCAA stated its football playing rules do not include a mechanism to overturn game outcomes, and the FBS oversight committee lacks authority to reverse results, citing NCAA rulebook Articles 3 and 9. ESPN obtained a memo from NCAA national coordinator of officials Ron Snodgrass establishing standard timing protocol guidance, noting that had it been followed, Western Michigan would have won. Steinbrecher also appealed to CFP executive director Rich Clark to recognize WMU as the actual winner for evaluation purposes, with the CFP confirming receipt and ongoing review.
