OpenAI announced a solution to the Navier-Stokes problem, a Millennium Prize Problem, but the achievement is clouded by credit disputes. The company faces allegations it used unpublished work from other researchers.

Tristan Buckmaster, a mathematician at New York University, and Levent Alpöge, a researcher at Anthropic, had been developing their own solution using multiple LLMs, including OpenAI's Codex. Buckmaster claims OpenAI may have intensified efforts after learning of their progress and questioned whether the model accessed their sessions.

Buckmaster says he was offered two credit options: a partial development with OpenAI publishing the next day, or a solo paper crediting OpenAI's LLM without Alpöge's name. He declined both. OpenAI's Sebastien Bubeck and CEO Sam Altman have responded, with Bubeck refuting the claim about removing Alpöge's name.

OpenAI stated it will not claim the $1 million prize. The controversy highlights friction over AI's role in mathematics and credit attribution.
