Standard Ethernet cable lengths max out at 328 feet (100 meters) for reliable connection speeds. This limit accounts for signal loss, interference, and timing issues. A typical setup uses 295 feet of solid-core cable plus up to 33 feet of flexible patch cables at either end.

Cable category determines speed capabilities. Cat5e and Cat6 support up to 328 feet at 1 Gbps, while Cat6 reaches 10 Gbps only up to 180 feet. Cat6a extends 10 Gbps to the full 328-foot range.

For connections exceeding 328 feet, install an Ethernet switch at the midpoint or use fiber optic cable. Power over Ethernet (PoE) requires extra consideration as longer runs may not provide sufficient power. Choose cable type based on your network speed requirements—higher categories aren't always necessary for lower-speed connections.
