Apple introduces Reference Image on iPhone 18 Pro, a feature that cryptographically signs photos to prove they haven't been altered by AI. Users can compare against a 'digital negative' to verify authenticity. This addresses concerns about synthetic imagery.

The feature uses Apple Private Cloud Compute to generate a signature. Images can be shared, allowing others to verify their integrity later. However, Reference Image won't be available in the EU or China.

Apple's own AI tools, like Image Playgrounds, Extend, and Spatial Reframe, will embed Synth ID markers. This distinguishes AI-generated content from authentic photos. The feature marks a step toward transparency in digital imagery.
