Apple’s Mail app has long been plagued by lackluster search. In fact, some might say 'lackluster' is too kind a word to use.

A new ranking system brings the most relevant results to the top to help you find what you need right away — even if it's buried deep in your inbox.

When you first open search in iOS 27's Mail app, there's a banner at the top that highlights 'Expanded Search Results.' It explains: 'Mail can look for more results based on what you mean, not just the words you type.' Essentially, Apple is bringing search into the 21st century. Or you could say, it's making search work the way it always should have. I've used iOS 27 in beta for several months, and in my experience it's definitely an upgrade over the old system.

There hasn't been a single time that I've tried searching for something and couldn't find it. But understandably, your mileage may vary. The improved search relies on proper indexing, so if your iPhone is still performing indexing (check the Settings app to see if it's 'Optimizing Search & Siri'), you may need to wait a bit before search works as well as it should.
