Apple is working on plans to make enterprise servers powered by M8 Ultra chips, according to a report from The Information. The company plans to offer the AI-focused servers for sale, not just use them internally, but the plans have not yet been finalized and the servers are not expected to go on sale until 2029.

Apple has been developing the server to sell to AI developers, other businesses and governments. The product under consideration would come in two versions: a smaller one with two of Apple’s planned M8 Ultra chips clustered together, and a bigger one with four M8 Ultra chips.

Apple is said to have considered connecting the M8 chips in the server using an Nvidia set of products called NVLink Fusion, which includes switches, chiplets and software that help chips communicate with each other in data centers. Apple is said to have been working on the project for around a year, with CEO John Ternus in favor.

9to5Mac says the project could be canceled before then, but it would make sense given demand for more powerful Apple servers to run AI models.
