Novo drops Nordisk to revive obesity drug appeal

Novo Nordisk announced it will use the shortened name "Novo" for day-to-day operations, dropping Nordisk for the first time since its founding over a century ago. The rebrand aims to boost appeal in the competitive obesity drug market, where the Danish maker of Ozempic and Wegovy has lost market share to Eli Lilly. Chief Executive Mike Doustdar, brought in last year to revive the company's performance, will face pressure at next week's capital markets day to demonstrate new strategic ideas. Analyst Evan Seigerman of BMO Capital Markets noted the name is already colloquially used by most investors. While the obesity pill performs well, investors remain nervous about the group's lack of diversification, with 93 percent of recent quarter revenue coming from obesity and diabetes sales. The company also updated its logo, with its trademark Apis bull now facing right instead of left. Despite the rebrand, Novo Nordisk will remain the legal entity name.

Novo became Europe's most valuable company in 2023 thanks to an early lead in obesity treatments. However, it has since lost ground to Lilly's Zepbound and Mounjaro in the US, as Lilly was quicker to launch direct-to-consumer sales. The rebrand signals the group's latest move to reconnect with people, partners and stakeholders globally, though analysts warn it must not become a distraction from serious strategic refinement and execution.
