Manchester City have completed a joint-British record £125m deal to sign midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea, ending a 79-day transfer saga. The move breaks City's club record for the second time this summer following Elliot Anderson's £116m arrival. Fernandez becomes the first player in football history to move for more than £100m twice, having joined Chelsea from Benfica for £107m in 2023. He joins Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand as the only players to break the British transfer record twice in the Premier League era.

The deal overcame significant obstacles, including acrimony surrounding Enzo Maresca's appointment as City manager after leaving Chelsea in June. Maresca apologised for the "disruption" caused by his mid-season departure, but senior City sources maintained no ill feeling existed. The 46-year-old Italian was the key factor in the transfer, keen to reunite with his former Chelsea captain whom he trusts to execute his tactical system without adaptation time.

Fernandez brings World Cup-winning experience and leadership to a midfield depleted by the departures of Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders and Nico Gonzalez. The 25-year-old Argentina international, named young player of the 2022 World Cup, adds big-game know-how despite controversy surrounding his summer antics. City had previously pursued Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto but were deterred by asking prices before pivoting to Fernandez as a positional necessity.
