OpenAI's ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox have been classified as very large online platforms under the EU Digital Services Act. The designation subjects these services to stricter obligations, including removing illegal content and protecting minors' privacy. Failure to comply could result in fines of up to 6% of global revenue.

The decision follows the platforms surpassing 45 million monthly users in the EU, the threshold for enhanced scrutiny. OpenAI stated it is preparing to meet the new requirements, while Roblox called it a proud milestone emphasizing safety. Reddit did not immediately comment.

This expansion of the DSA into generative AI marks a significant regulatory shift, coming as Brussels also enforces its AI Act. The EU's move occurs amid transatlantic tension, with Washington criticizing the regulations as unfairly targeting US companies. Meanwhile, the Commission defended its laws apply globally, noting previous fines against companies like AliExpress.

The regulatory actions underscore Brussels' growing influence over major tech platforms regardless of headquarters location.
