The Sandisk Optimus GX Pro 8100 2 TB is the company's new flagship, replacing the WD_Black SN8100. Under the hood, it's the same drive, delivering top-tier real-world speed, a huge SLC cache, and efficient operation—if only pricing were better.

Sandisk, a famous storage brand, was bought by Western Digital in 2016 and split in 2025. Sandisk took over flash and SSD business. The Optimus series—announced at CES in January—is the first consumer SSD family with Sandisk branding, split into Optimus, Optimus GX, and Optimus GX Pro. The GX Pro 8100 takes over from the WD Black SN8100. Technically, both are identical: same Silicon Motion SM2508 controller, same Kioxia BiCS8 218-layer TLC NAND, same 2 GB DDR4 cache, though DRAM is now from Samsung. Firmware is slightly newer. The SM2508 focuses on efficiency, also used in Kioxia Exceria Pro G2, Acer Predator GM9000, Kingston Fury Renegade, Lexar NM1090.

NAND is Kioxia BiCS8 218-layer 3D TLC, rebranded to Sandisk, in a single-sided design with two packages. A 2 GB DDR4 DRAM cache handles mapping tables. Capacities: 1 TB ($300), 2 TB ($550), 4 TB ($1080), 8 TB ($2150). Heatsink models add $20–$50. Endurance: 600 TBW, 1200 TBW, 2400 TBW, 4800 TBW. Five-year warranty.
