YMTC SSDs Now in Global Lenovo Laptops Amid NAND Shortage

Lenovo is shipping YMTC SSDs in its global laptop configurations for the first time, marking a significant shift in the NAND Flash supply chain. This comes as SSD prices have surged due to widespread shortages of storage modules traditionally dominated by Samsung and Micron. Chinese memory maker YMTC has ramped up volume production using its Xtacking 4.0 technology, offering 1TB TLC and 2TB QLC options.

The new ThinkBook 14 G9 model uses a 512GB NVMe PCIe 4.0 M.2 2242 SSD with 3,950 MB/s read speeds and 2,514 MB/s write speeds, according to Notebookcheck testing. While these numbers fall below average for office laptops, they're adequate for mainstream use and help alleviate supply chain pressure. Previously, Lenovo sourced DRAM from Chinese supplier CXMT exclusively for Chinese market models.

This development signals growing acceptance of Chinese semiconductor solutions in global PC supply chains. Even Apple is reportedly negotiating with the U.S. government to use sanctioned Chinese memory maker CXMT in its products, including potential iPhone 18 series components. With Apple facing higher component costs, YMTC's entry offers a cost-effective alternative amid tightening supply constraints.

The integration of YMTC SSDs into non-Chinese models represents a strategic move by Lenovo to navigate component shortages while reducing reliance on traditional suppliers. As NAND Flash prices stabilize, expect more global OEMs to evaluate Chinese memory solutions for cost-sensitive product lines.
