Steam Updates AI Disclosure Rules for Game Developers

Valve has refined its Steam policy for disclosing AI use in games. The platform's new guidelines clarify that developers must report AI-generated content players directly consume, like artwork or sound. However, the rules now explicitly exclude AI efficiency tools from mandatory disclosure, focusing only on assets that appear in the final game or store pages.

This adjustment comes as AI code helpers and similar tools become commonplace in development pipelines. Valve wants to avoid burdening studios for using AI to speed up workflows, while still ensuring players know when a game's creative assets are machine-made. The company still flags live generative AI for its copyright and safety risks.

Developers remain fully responsible for any AI content in their games or on Steam's storefront. The disclosure will still appear on a game's store page. As AI tools evolve, Valve's stance will likely continue to adapt, balancing transparency for consumers with practical realities for creators.
