Steam Machine RLOD Triggers at 100°C

Valve has updated its Steam Machine Q&A and BIOS to enhance the LED strip functionality. The "red line of death" (RLOD) was previously mistaken for a system problem but is actually a thermal warning feature.

The new BIOS update causes the LED strip to turn red when the CPU or GPU reaches 100°C, triggering thermal throttling to protect the system. Earlier reports indicated warnings at 95°C CPU and 90°C GPU, but Valve adjusted thresholds since the custom AMD processor's TJ Max is likely 105°C before automatic shutdown.

Under normal operation, the LED remains blue. Valve's internal cooling system with heatsink and fan is sufficient for typical use, though room temperature and placement in cramped spaces with limited airflow can cause persistent overheating issues.
