SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has voiced concerns over "abnormally high" semiconductor prices, warning of "chipflation" that could hurt consumer markets and the long-term South Korean semiconductor industry. He advocates for increased supply, even at lower margins for companies, as AI demand surges while PC and smartphone makers struggle to absorb rising costs.

Chey predicts AI semiconductor demand could rise by 60-100% next year, with overall demand increasing by 50-60%, outpacing production. This situation has led to shortages, forcing PC OEMs to secure deals with China's CXMT.

In response, SK hynix is exploring options for a new semiconductor factory in the United States, potentially expanding its US presence beyond the $4 billion investment in Indiana for advanced packaging and HBM production, slated for operation in 2028. The company is evaluating global locations based on speed, scale, and feasibility.
