SK hynix is committing approximately 15 billion USD to construct its first semiconductor fabrication facility within the massive Yongin Semiconductor Cluster in South Korea. This latest investment brings the total cost for the first fab to about 21.5 billion USD, with construction already visible as a structure rivaling a 50-story building. The funding decision, announced February 25, targets completion by the end of 2030.

This massive capital outlay is a direct response to structurally higher global demand for high-performance memory chips. The expansion of artificial intelligence, data centers, and high-performance computing is driving a need for more advanced, high-density semiconductors. SK hynix aims to get ahead of this curve, expanding production capacity to solidify its supply chain for key customers.

The investment follows a prior 6.5 billion USD commitment made in July 2024. By building one of the world's largest fabs, SK hynix is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the booming market for components powering next-generation servers and AI accelerators, directly challenging rivals in the advanced memory space.
