Preservationists Cry foul as Sony axes physical PlayStation discs

Sony will stop producing physical game discs for new releases in early 2027, and rumors suggest Xbox may follow with its Helix console while Nintendo now bundles digital keys with its media. The Video Game History Foundation issued a warning that the shift threatens preservation, resale value, and consumer choice, underscoring a broader industry move toward digital exclusivity.

The foundation argues the change is largely symbolic because most recent physical releases required day‑one downloads, and the majority of games from the past two decades weren’t built for dedicated consoles. Museums view discs as temporary storage; without emulation support they add little archival value, making long‑term preservation practically impossible.

VGHF calls on industry, especially the Entertainment Software Association, to craft legal pathways for museums to archive digital‑only titles without copyright risk. Past attempts to reform copy‑protection laws have been blocked, leaving archives with no reliable solution. The ESA recently warned in a hearing that easing preservation rights could hurt revenue. Without such a framework, researchers may only see screenshots instead of playable games.
