Microsoft is reportedly planning massive layoffs across its Xbox Gaming division, with several studios allegedly facing closure. More than 3,500 unionized Xbox employees are preparing to fight back against the rumored cuts, according to a virtual press conference by the Communications Workers of America. Frank Arce, vice president of CWA District 9, declared that workers will not be treated as disposable.

Developers from ZeniMax Online, Activision-Blizzard, and Arkane Austin shared experiences at the meeting, unanimously agreeing that Xbox employees need protections including advanced notice, hiring freezes for internal transfers, and strong severance packages. Blizzard editor Alison Veneto emphasized that everyone deserves long-term certainty about their position if layoffs occur.

The union will wait until Microsoft officially announces layoffs before initiating negotiations, though internal discussions about the at-risk studios have already begun. CWA leaders criticized Microsoft's mixed messaging, pointing to Xbox Series X|S price increases amid AI-driven RAM cost hikes while the company simultaneously invests heavily in artificial intelligence.

This clash highlights growing tensions in the gaming industry as major publishers restructure operations. Unionized workers are demanding transparency and accountability as Microsoft weighs cost-cutting measures against employee welfare and retention.
