Xbox ex‑staff allege retaliation ahead of July layoffs

A leak this week indicated that Microsoft plans a significant layoff wave in July after revenue slipped and the gaming division pivoted its strategy. In response, several ex‑Xbox employees have cautioned current staff that the cuts could be used as retaliation. The warning recently follows a pattern of complaints surfacing after previous workforce reductions at the console maker.

The new allegations echo earlier claims by former Halo Studios art director Glenn Israel, who accused the company of harassment and retaliatory firings. Four former Xbox staff told Game Developer they were dismissed after reporting toxic behavior: one was laid off after testifying in a verbal‑abuse probe, another faced a performance‑improvement plan for “disrespect,” and a third was penalized for filing an ADA accommodation request.

Xbox has not publicly addressed the claims, and senior management has yet to comment. Israel advises anyone who has filed complaints to preserve emails, messages and meeting notes, and to alert HR that redundancy may be retaliatory. The controversy threatens morale inside Microsoft’s gaming arm and could influence how talent evaluates future opportunities at the industry studio.
