Microsoft Splits Windows 11 Updates: x86-64 Gets 26H2 While ARM Devices Stay on 26H1

Microsoft confirmed Windows 11 version 26H2 will arrive exclusively for x86-64 PCs running Intel or AMD processors later this year. The update targets traditional Windows machines while leaving ARM-based devices on a separate development path, creating a clear platform divide for the operating system's evolution.

This approach reverses the company's earlier strategy where Windows 11 26H1 launched solely for ARM hardware, particularly Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite systems. Meanwhile, NVIDIA RTX Spark devices scheduled for Fall release will ship with the 26H1 baseline rather than the newer x86-64 update, ensuring ARM platform consistency despite hardware availability delays.

Windows 11 26H2 represents a minor update rather than a major overhaul, building on the same code base as 25H2. Installation mirrors routine monthly Patch Tuesday deployments, bundling accumulated security patches and quality improvements without disruptive system file replacements or user environment migrations.

Microsoft will support three Windows versions simultaneously—24H2, 25H2, and 26H2—making the 26H2 update essential for ongoing security coverage. Organizations requiring stable, unchanging platforms should consider Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC versions instead, which lock specific kernel code bases and receive security updates until predetermined future dates.
