Microsoft Fixes Windows 11 File Explorer Slow Launch Issue

Microsoft's Windows 11 June 2026 update (KB5095093) delivers long-awaited performance improvements to File Explorer, addressing one of the operating system's most criticized flaws. Users have complained about sluggish launch speeds since Windows 11's debut, forcing Microsoft to implement background preloading as a temporary workaround.

The update takes a more fundamental approach by restructuring how the Home tab indexes files and retrieves data from cloud storage and pinned folders. This architectural change eliminates the need for preloading tricks and delivers genuinely faster initial launches. The Home tab's constant data polling had been the primary bottleneck in File Explorer performance.

Microsoft also added practical quick actions including "Open file location" and "Ask Copilot" that appear during file hover interactions. Address bar functionality sees notable improvements with backslash and quotation mark support, while disk image mounting responsiveness gets a boost. These changes enhance daily workflow efficiency for millions of Windows users.

Currently optional, the update becomes mandatory in July 2026, automatically delivering these File Explorer improvements to all Windows 11 machines. The KB5095093 package represents Microsoft's commitment to addressing core OS performance rather than masking issues with background processes.
