Micron Technology has begun shipping its 6600 ION SSD, a single‑drive offering 245 TB of raw capacity—the highest commercially available today. Built on G9 QLC NAND, the E3.L version delivers the same performance as lower‑capacity SSDs while slashing rack count by roughly 82 % versus HDD arrays. The drive targets AI, cloud and hyperscale workloads that demand dense, low‑latency storage.

Available in U.2 and E3.L form factors, the 6600 ION consumes up to 30 W at peak, about half the power draw of a comparable HDD deployment. Micron claims the SSD cuts cooling needs and carbon output, equating annual savings to the CO₂ absorption of over 9,000 mature trees. Dell’s senior VP, Travis Vigil, says the drive’s density will trim total‑cost‑of‑ownership for AI‑focused racks.

In Micron’s lab tests the 245 TB SSD delivered up to 84‑times better energy efficiency for AI preprocessing, 8.6‑times faster data preparation and 3.4‑times higher ingest throughput, while object‑storage benchmarks showed 435‑times throughput‑per‑watt gains. Those figures translate into measurable sustainability benefits for megabyte‑scale deployments. The 6600 ION now powers Dell PowerEdge servers at Tech World, confirming its readiness for production AI pipelines.
