Marathon Test Weekend Draws 143K Steam Players Amid Divided Feedback

Marathon's free test weekend (February 26-March 3) peaked at 143,621 concurrent players on Steam, a figure that excludes Xbox and PlayStation 5 users. This "server slam" event, designed to test infrastructure, provided a major public debut for Bungie's upcoming extraction shooter. The turnout demonstrated significant interest but only tells part of the story.

Despite the strong numbers, player reception is fractured. Online discussions, particularly on Reddit, cite persistent issues with UI readability, gunplay feel, NPC AI behavior, and character balance—where some operators are deemed overpowered. Performance problems and a perceived lack of tension in PvP encounters also feature prominently in critical feedback.

The Bungie development team responded on X, acknowledging most complaints and either offering workarounds or soliciting detailed reports. This direct engagement signals the studio is prioritizing pre-launch iteration. The volume and specificity of criticism, however, set a high benchmark for the polish required before the game's eventual release.
