IBM is expanding its z17 and LinuxONE 5 server lines with new single frame and rack mount configurations, offering greater deployment flexibility. These updates allow organizations to integrate the same high-performance, secure systems into diverse data center environments, addressing challenges like rising rental costs and limited space. The new options aim to optimize data center footprints and improve operational efficiency.

These updated systems boast improved specifications, including up to 82 cores and 18 TB of memory per two processor drawers, a notable increase over previous models. The z17 ME2 processor provides about 10% greater throughput per core compared to the z16 A02. This enhanced performance, coupled with options for co-locating IBM and non-IBM equipment, provides IT departments with significant flexibility in system design and utilization.

IBM is also introducing new software to simplify management and modernization. Infrastructure Management for Z and Linux ONE supports Infrastructure-as-Code automation, while COBOL Elevate for z/OS aims to streamline COBOL application modernization without requiring rewrites. Security features like post-quantum cryptography are now standard on z17 and Linux ONE Rockhopper 5 systems, alongside new crypto discovery tools. The new configurations are available starting August 12, 2026.
