HP Launches $49.99-129.99/month Omen Gaming Laptop Subscription

HP has launched the Omen Gaming Subscription, a hardware rental service offering gaming laptops and accessories for monthly fees ranging from $49.99 to $129.99. The program includes three tiers: the base plan with a Victus 15 featuring an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS and RTX 4050, a mid-tier Omen 17 with Ryzen AI 7 350 and RTX 5060, and a premium Omen Max 16 with Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX and RTX 5080. Customers are locked into a 12-month contract with cancellation fees between $549.99 and $1,429.99 after two months.

This move follows similar attempts by NZXT and mirrors HP's existing printer subscription model, which charges $7.99 monthly for 20 pages. The gaming subscription requires a soft credit check and includes a 30-day trial period with ongoing warranty coverage. HP promises annual hardware upgrades with each renewal cycle. The service targets gamers who prefer predictable monthly payments over large upfront purchases.

However, the subscription model has drawn significant criticism online, with users on r/pcmasterrace labeling it a scam and comparing it unfavorably to purchasing refurbished systems. The backlash echoes the negative reception NZXT received for its Flex PC subscription program. While hardware rental services offer accessibility, the high cancellation fees and long-term costs raise questions about value compared to traditional ownership models.
