DDR4 16 Gb spot prices dropped 5% in March following a staggering 2,200% increase that had priced many consumers out of upgrades. The surge was driven by massive AI data center demand that absorbed virtually all available DDR production capacity, impacting everyone from PC DIY enthusiasts to major laptop manufacturers.

The price correction comes after DDR4 16 Gb modules skyrocketed from $3.20 to $74.10 - a 22x increase - while DDR5 16 Gb modules rose from $5.30 to $37.20. This dramatic price differential between DDR4 and DDR5 spot pricing reflects manufacturers shifting production lines to newer DDR5 technology. Contract pricing between memory makers like Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron and large buyers like Apple and Dell remained separate from these spot market fluctuations.

While the 5% drop offers hope for consumers, DDR4 prices remain historically high. The spot market typically serves smaller DRAM volumes purchased by distributors and supply chain logistics firms.
