Popular PC diagnostic tools CPU-Z and HWMonitor were compromised in a malware attack that affected downloads from the CPUID website during the night of April 9-10. Users who downloaded these utilities during that window received malware-infected files instead of the legitimate software. Windows Defender flagged the suspicious downloads, alerting users to the security breach.

According to CPUID, attackers exploited a secondary API feature to temporarily redirect download links to malicious files. The breach lasted approximately six hours before being detected and resolved. CPUID's owner Sam confirmed that while the download links were compromised, the original signed files remained intact. The website has since been secured and is safe for normal use.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of even trusted software distribution channels. Diagnostic tools like CPU-Z and HWMonitor are essential utilities for PC enthusiasts and professionals, making them attractive targets for attackers. Users who downloaded these tools during the affected timeframe should scan their systems for malware and verify their installations.
