The NVIDIA 12v-2×6 GPU power cable meltdown debacle has become a cat-and-mouse game, with board partners and PSU manufacturers constantly seeking workarounds against cables that have claimed many gaming GPUs. ASUS's latest GPU Tweak III V2.1.8.0 update introduces a new feature to prevent potential temperature-induced premature failure.

This update adds support for auto-shutdown on models equipped with Power Detector+. This feature will shut down a system when "persistently high current is detected," though ASUS has not disclosed the exact parameters or duration required to trigger the shutdown.

This specific auto-shutdown functionality is limited to Power Detector+ GPUs, specifically the ASUS ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090, ROG Astral LC GeForce RTX 5090, ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080, and ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 4090. ASUS's previous safeguards included the ROG Equalizer cable, designed to keep internal temperatures at or below 73 °C.
