AMD OpenSIL Firmware Expands to AM5 Consumer Boards

AMD's openSIL firmware project has reached a new milestone with 3mbdeb's successful boot testing on MSI's PRO B850-P consumer motherboard. The Polish open-source consulting firm, funded by the NLnet Foundation, enabled initial AM5 'Phoenix' support in Coreboot, marking the first consumer platform to run the experimental silicon-initialization stack. This development follows AMD's roadmap to replace legacy AGESA firmware with openSIL across its processor lineup.

According to AMD's lead firmware architect, openSIL will eventually power all Zen processors, starting with EPYC Turin servers last summer. The complexity of desktop platforms presents unique challenges compared to servers, as a single Platform Security Processor directory must support multiple CPU families. 3mbdeb's engineer Michał Żygowski notes their work remains in "Proof of Concept" stage and isn't intended for production use, though future releases promise more stability.

This consumer AM5 experiment represents a crucial step toward AMD's 2026 goal of publishing Zen 6 Venice CPU openSIL sources. While the current implementation achieves basic boot functionality, distinguishing between mobile and desktop Phoenix SoCs/APUs remains a key milestone. As AMD continues its transition from proprietary firmware, this open-source initiative could reshape how enthusiasts and manufacturers approach motherboard development.
