At Computex 2026, AMD marked a decade of its Socket AM4 platform, noting its rise from Zen to Zen 3 and its shift past Intel. The company launched a new Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the fastest gaming chip on AM4, underscoring the socket’s sustained relevance for gamers and enthusiasts seeking top‑tier performance without a platform change.

Earlier this year, AMD introduced Socket AM5 with Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 chips, promising two generations before 2027. Since then, the company rolled out Ryzen 8000 APUs and the current Ryzen 9000 series powered by Zen 5, alongside Ryzen AI 400 desktop APUs, providing consumers with performance and better power efficiency across a broader range of use cases.

At the event, AMD also revealed that Socket AM5 will stay viable until 2029, implying at least one more microarchitecture, Zen 6, will surface. The firm likely will hold off a 2026 launch of Zen 6, instead teasing it in 2027, with products following in 2028 and 2029 to keep the platform competitive.

AMD’s longevity plan signals confidence that AM5 will support future Zen 6 and beyond, giving users a stable upgrade path without motherboard swaps. The move also tightens the company’s position against Intel, as it allows AMD to deliver newer architectures while keeping a single, mature socket in circulation, reducing fragmentation for consumers and ensuring market adoption.
