AMD Extends FSR 4.1 Upscaling to RDNA 3 GPUs This July

AMD is finally delivering what gamers have demanded: FSR 4.1 upscaling support for existing Radeon hardware. The company confirmed that millions of RDNA 3-based RX 7000 series cards will receive the machine learning-powered upscaling technology starting this July, bringing capabilities previously limited to the latest RDNA 4 architecture. Over 300 games already support the feature.

The rollout required significant engineering work to bridge hardware differences between generations. RDNA 4 cards include dedicated FP8 processing units alongside INT8 support, while RDNA 3 GPUs operate on INT8 alone. AMD had to reoptimize the underlying ML algorithms for the older architecture, explaining why this port took longer than initially expected.

RDNA 2 owners must wait until early 2027 for their turn, as the optimization challenges prove even greater for that generation. This staggered approach demonstrates AMD's commitment to supporting its existing customer base rather than forcing upgrades. However, the delay highlights how rapidly evolving upscaling technology is outpacing older hardware design.

For consumers, this means continued relevance for their current GPUs while developers can target broader hardware pools with consistent upscaling quality.
