Elder Scrolls Online Shifts to Free DLC & Battle Pass Model

ZeniMax Online Studios is fundamentally restructuring Elder Scrolls Online's post-launch strategy, moving away from traditional paid expansions toward a seasonal model with free core content. Announced in a recent interview, the new approach launches with 'Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk' on April 2, 2026. This season introduces the Night Market, a seven-week limited-time event zone set in Oblivion's Fargrave realm where players pledge to factions for new PvE storylines and an earnable in-game home.

The critical shift involves the revenue model: while all major gameplay DLC becomes free-to-access, monetization will pivot to the 'Tamriel Tomes' battle pass system. This offers both free and premium progression tracks, representing a significant departure from the previous paid Chapter expansion structure. For players, this means immediate access to new zones and stories without upfront cost, while long-term support relies on optional battle pass purchases.

This evolution aims to focus development on core gameplay loops and seasonal engagement rather than annual paid releases, potentially revitalizing the MMORPG's accessibility and player retention.
