In a significant shift, Volkswagen surpassed Tesla in European EV sales last year. VW's electric vehicle sales surged by 56 percent, reaching 274,278 units. Meanwhile, Tesla's sales decreased by 27 percent, totaling 236,357 vehicles. This marks the first time VW has outsold Tesla in the European market, signaling a potential change in the EV landscape.

VW's success extends beyond its core brand, with strong contributions from Skoda, Audi, Cupra, and Porsche, all under the VW umbrella. While the Model Y remains the best-selling EV overall, both it and the Model 3 experienced sales declines. This shift suggests increasing competition and changing consumer preferences within the European EV market.

Overall EV sales in Europe rose by 29 percent, capturing 19.5 percent of the market. However, the growth of mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids also played a role. As the European car market recovers, expect further developments and shifts in the EV sector. The industry is watching to see if Tesla can regain its dominance.
