On Thursday, a US District Court in Oregon ordered the US government to restart approving wind projects. All new wind development has been on hold since August 2025, when the DoD stopped participating in a process allowing it to compel developers to alter projects to limit radar interference. The court ruled that national security claims didn't allow opting out of a legally mandated process.

The Trump administration has made many attempts to block wind development, both offshore and land-based. Its offshore attempts used the same approach: claiming drone developments make radar interference a security risk. Courts were unsympathetic, even after examining a classified report. So the administration turned to paying companies not to pursue wind.

For onshore, a law lays out a process for DoD to evaluate problems and negotiate changes. The government stopped participating in August 2025, first refusing to sign off on agreements, then refusing to draft them, and eventually refusing to negotiate at all. This halted all wind development in the US.
