Pentagon Stalls 150 Wind Farms as Trump Tightens Energy Grip

The Trump administration is blocking more than 150 onshore wind farms by stalling Pentagon reviews that were once routine, according to the American Clean Power Association. Companies say the delays worsened significantly in recent weeks, with the Pentagon canceling meetings and not responding to calls. The stalled projects represent roughly 30 gigawatts of potential generating capacity if built.

The reviews check whether wind turbines could interfere with military radar or flight paths. Developers of at least 35 large wind farms have already negotiated mitigation agreements with the Pentagon but remain stuck because they need a final signature from Assistant Secretary Dale Marks. The trade group sent a letter to Marks in March asking for an explanation, but received no timeline for completion.

The administration has faced legal setbacks, with several wind power-blocking efforts struck down by courts in recent months. It has also paid nearly $2 billion to companies to abandon offshore wind leases. Wind power currently provides about 10% of the nation's electricity, though roughly 15 gigawatts of projects have already received clearances and are moving forward.
