SpaceX is nearing a deal with the state of Louisiana to acquire approximately 130,000 acres of marshland along the northern Gulf Coast. Governor Jeff Landry is expected to announce the agreement soon.

The proposed acquisition encompasses an 18-mile stretch of marshland southwest of Lafayette, known as Pecan Island. This site became available following a legal settlement involving Exxon Mobil regarding pollution and coastal land loss.

SpaceX has previously indicated its intention to launch its Starship rockets frequently, potentially thousands of times annually. This ambitious goal necessitates multiple launch sites, and the company has been exploring various domestic and international locations for expansion. The Louisiana marshland offers a remote, undeveloped coastal option.

This potential deal follows legislative action in Louisiana, which passed bills offering incentives for aerospace companies, including liability protections and property tax breaks. The agreement is also expected to include provisions for coastal restoration and preservation of the sensitive marshland, which serves as vital wildlife habitat and a natural buffer against hurricanes.
