SpaceX Plans Texas Natural Gas Pipeline for Starship Fuel

SpaceX is moving forward with plans to build an 8-mile natural gas pipeline in Texas to support its Starship program. The pipeline would stretch from the Port of Brownsville to the company's Starbase facility, with construction set to begin next month and completion targeted for January 26. The 16-inch pipeline will deliver natural gas directly to Starbase for processing into liquid methane, the fuel that powers SpaceX's reusable rocket.

Currently, SpaceX relies on hundreds of tanker trucks to transport roughly 630,000 gallons of liquid methane for each Starship launch. The company has FAA approval for up to 25 flights per year but has only completed 12 launches since the vehicle's maiden flight in April 2023. Building the pipeline would streamline fuel delivery and reduce the logistical burden of truck transport.

The project raises fresh environmental concerns for the area around Starbase, which includes sensitive wetland habitats. According to filings, SpaceX has explored drilling in multiple locations across Texas. The company submitted engineering plans to the US Corps of Engineers last summer for a liquefaction facility at the site.

This infrastructure move shows SpaceX accelerating toward routine Starship operations, though the environmental trade-offs remain unclear.
