Quantum dots move qubits: Delft, QuTech show spin qubits can relocate without losing info

Researchers at Delft University of Technology and startup QuTech have demonstrated movable quantum dot qubits, a breakthrough for quantum computing. Their chip features a linear array of quantum dots, where single electron spins were shifted between dots using electrical signals. The team achieved 99% success in two-qubit gates and 87% teleportation success—key for error correction and complex calculations.

Quantum dots confine electrons in tiny spaces, enabling bulk manufacturing and chip integration. But traditional designs lock qubits into fixed positions, complicating error correction. This new system allows qubits to move between zones: storage areas and interaction hubs—mimicking atomic/ion flexibility while retaining manufacturability. The six-dot prototype, though small, hints at scalable solutions.
