NASA's Artemis III Orbit Decision Could Impact Lunar Landing Timeline

NASA is nearing critical decisions on its Artemis III mission, just days after Artemis II's Pacific splashdown. The agency is debating whether to fly the next mission in low-Earth orbit (LEO) or high-Earth orbit (HEO). This choice is crucial because it determines if the final interim cryogenic propulsion stage (ICPS) can be saved for the subsequent Artemis IV lunar landing mission.

Artemis III aims to 'buy down' risk before attempting a crewed Moon landing. The mission will use the Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket, potentially rendezvousing with SpaceX's Starship lander and Blue Origin's Blue Moon lander in whichever orbit is chosen. Artemis III is now slated to fly before the planned lunar landings, fundamentally altering the Artemis timeline announced six weeks ago.
