NASA has cancelled its planned Artemis III moon landing mission, originally scheduled for 2025, due to delays and technical setbacks in earlier Artemis missions. The decision, announced by NASA administrator Jared Isaacman at Kennedy Space Center, pushes the U.S. return to the lunar surface to at least 2028.

Artemis I succeeded in 2022, but Artemis II faced delays and is now targeting an April launch. These setbacks forced NASA to reassess its approach. Rather than rushing toward a moon landing, the agency will focus on incremental improvements and risk reduction. The current mission lineup "is just not the right pathway forward," Isaacman stated.

Artemis III will now become a low-Earth orbit research flight, while Artemis IV will take over as the first crewed lunar landing mission, now targeted for mid-2028. NASA plans to use the additional time to gain more flight experience, refine spacecraft systems, and address software issues that have plagued the Artemis program. The agency emphasized that returning to the moon remains a priority, but only after building a more reliable foundation.
