Microsoft's New Gaming Chief Takes Hard Stance Against AI in Games

Microsoft's new gaming chief Asha Sharma is making waves with her strong position on artificial intelligence in game development. In a recent interview with Variety, Sharma declared she has "no tolerance for bad AI" and promised not to "flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop." The statements come after Sharma's promotion to head Microsoft's gaming division following Phil Spencer's surprise departure.

Sharma, who previously led Microsoft's CoreAI Product group, emphasized that "great stories are created by humans" and that games "are and always will be art, crafted by humans." Her stance puts Microsoft at odds with industry trends where many developers are embracing AI tools for efficiency. The gaming community remains deeply divided on AI's role, with some indie developers facing backlash for using generative AI in their projects.

Unlike Spencer, who spent years in the gaming industry before his leadership role, Sharma has no professional game development experience. Her personal gaming history is limited - her Xbox profile shows only about a month of activity compared to Spencer's decades-long history with over 121,000 gamerscore. Sharma has been seeking recommendations from the community while trying to catch up on gaming classics like Borderlands 2 and Halo. Her appointment represents a significant shift in Microsoft's gaming leadership approach.
