Anthropic MHS Standard Lets AI Control Physical Hardware

Anthropic introduced the Model Hardware Specification (MHS), a new standard enabling AI models like Claude to interact with physical devices. The system allows AI to control equipment such as lasers, microscopes, and robotic arms without prior training. MHS includes a standardized tagging system that communicates hardware constraints, physical characteristics, and safety limits to AI models. This enables models to reason through tasks, adjust scripts in real time, and sequence steps across different instruments. In a demo, Claude successfully guided a robotic arm to pick up an aluminum can using reasoning rather than pre-trained steps. The standard is designed to bridge the gap between virtual training and real-world application. Anthropic is collaborating with Amazon Web Services (Strands Robots), Hugging Face (Le Robot), Raspberry Pi, Automata, and Universal Robots during a preview period. These partners will help develop safety evaluations and best practices. Eventually, MHS will become an open-source, agent-agnostic standard. Early testing showed significant reductions in device integration time, accelerating experimental iteration.
