Meta pitches new open AI model strategy

Meta argues that no singular superintelligence can align with everyone's diverse values, so models should be personalized to individuals or groups. Decentralization will give benefits equally, instead of privileging a few.

Meta has lagged behind OpenAI and Anthropic in foundation models, which have targeted enterprise customers with powerful, revenue-generating tools. Meta also overhauled its AI division last year, replacing chief scientist Yann Le Cun with former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang.

Recent Chinese models like Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Max and Moonshot's Kimi K3 rival Anthropic and OpenAI at lower cost. Meta positions itself as a US alternative—more open, customizable, and affordable—orienting toward personal use rather than large-scale enterprise, a retreat from earlier ambitions.
