Linus Torvalds on AI in Linux: Fork or Walk Away

Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, has firmly stated his support for integrating AI-powered coding tools into the Linux kernel development process. He expressed that Linux will not be an "anti-AI project" and encouraged dissenters to either fork the project or disengage.

This stance emerged during a discussion on the Linux kernel mailing list concerning Sashiko, an AI system designed for code review that claims to identify a significant percentage of bugs. However, Sashiko can also generate "false positive" bug reports, potentially wasting maintainers' time.

Torvalds' comments came in response to arguments against using AI-generated code, including a Software Freedom Conservancy statement advocating for the rejection of LLM-generated code. Torvalds countered that while no one is forced to use these tools, he will "loudly ignore" those who try to prevent others from doing so. He emphasized that the project is not mandating AI use but will not prohibit it, indicating a willingness to accept AI-assisted contributions to improve the kernel.
