FireSat Satellites Launch Amid Wildfires

Smoke from hundreds of wildfires in Canada and the U.S. has obscured the sky as the first three operational satellites of the Google‑backed Fire Sat program launch into orbit. The microsatellites, carried aboard a Space X Falcon 9 from Vandenberg Space Force Base on July 7 2026, mark the constellation’s transition to “initial operational capability.” After a three‑month test period, the satellites will begin providing data to fire agencies, covering every fire‑prone region on Earth at least twice daily.

Fire Sat is the first constellation purpose‑built to detect wildfires, even those as small as five by five meters. The California‑based manufacturer Muon Space designed the satellites, which have received $15 million from Google and $26 million from the Bezos Earth Fund. A prototype that launched in March 2025 collected over one million images and proved the system could spot low‑intensity blazes invisible to other satellites.

The Earth Fire Alliance projects that an hourly revisit rate could save more than $1 billion in damage costs, prevent nearly 22 million tons of carbon emissions, and protect 3,500 homes and 1.3 million acres of land. Google’s AI models will compare operational Fire Sat data with historical images to identify very small fires and inform predictive modeling.

While Fire Sat offers a powerful tool, wildfire suppression also requires resources for prescribed burns and firefighting equipment. The growing intensity of fires in Canada’s boreal forests illustrates how climate change is overloading traditional suppression strategies.
