Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced significant changes within the Google DeepMind (GDM) teams, aiming to accelerate AI progress and focus on the future of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Demis Hassabis will transition to a new strategic role as Chair of GDM and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, allowing him to focus on shaping the future of AGI. He will continue leading Isomorphic Labs. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously CTO of GDM and Chief AI Architect, will step up as SVP of Google DeepMind, overseeing Gemini model development, research, and related teams. Hassabis expressed confidence in Kavukcuoglu, Josh, and the GDM executive team.

Additionally, Jeff Dean, after 27 years at Google, is launching an independent public benefit corporation with Sanjay Ghemawat to advance ML and science discoveries. Google will remain a founding investor and Cloud partner. Pichai highlighted Google's strong AI momentum, with Gemini models in high demand, the Gemini app reaching over 950M monthly users, and ongoing research breakthroughs. These changes are intended to maintain and drive this momentum.
