The Georgia utility missed the surge because two industrial hookups had slipped through its oversight, one installed without permission and the other unlinked to any account. The county’s move to a cloud‑based smart‑meter system had yet to mature.

When the leak surfaced, QTS paid roughly $150,000 to cover the water, but faced no penalties for breaching peak‑usage limits set during planning. County director Vanessa Tigert said the region’s thin staffing and a desire to keep its largest customer satisfied kept the issue from escalating. Residents, meanwhile, reported dwindling pressure amid a drought.

The episode highlights a broader trend: AI‑driven data centers consume water far beyond cooling needs, stressing already fragile supplies. Xylem’s research shows water use could double in 25 years, while 40 % of facilities sit in water‑stressed zones.
