Final Fantasy PC Development Shift Signals Gaming Platform Evolution

Square Enix is making a significant shift in its development strategy by designating PC as the lead platform for the _Final Fantasy VII Remake_ trilogy. Director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that the team now creates 3D assets at their highest quality level based on PC specifications, then scales down for console versions. This marks a departure from the series' traditional console-first approach.

Hamaguchi explained that while PC gaming is still growing in Japan, the rapid expansion of international PC gamers has influenced this decision. The company develops assets with the broad PC market in mind, and recent PC versions of _Final Fantasy VII Remake_ games have performed well on Steam and the Epic Games Store. This strategic pivot reflects the changing gaming landscape where PC has become a dominant platform for both development and distribution.

Despite this shift, console gamers shouldn't worry about delays. Previous _Final Fantasy VII Remake_ entries launched on PC 11-19 months after their console debuts. Hamaguchi also provided technical insights, noting that the PS5 and PS5 Pro are considered "mid-range platforms" requiring significant optimization, while the Xbox Series S faces specific memory limitations. The third installment in the trilogy is progressing smoothly and remains on schedule for its planned release.
